Adobe Premiere Pro Overview

Adobe Premiere Pro is the industry-standard video editing program. It’s used by everyone from amateur filmmakers and students to marketing professionals and movie producers. It features an easy-to-use nonlinear multi-track editing board, a massive collection of tools. As a part of the Adobe Creative Cloud, it’s easy to add elements from other Adobe software to your video.

Premiere Pro recently underwent a significant transformation, both in terms of its appearance and functionality. Among the noteworthy additions are the Auto Reframe tools, enhancements to text, graphics, and audio capabilities, expanded codec support, and the introduction of a Quick Export feature, to highlight just a few of the updates.

The software is way too big to go over everything in this review. Instead, I’ll focus on some of the highlighted features and new updates.

Adobe Premiere Pro Features

Update: The performance improvements in the latest version of Premiere Pro are significant, with up to 5x faster timeline performance. This is due to a number of factors, including:

  • New timeline rendering engine: Work with larger and more complex projects more efficiently.
  • Improved GPU acceleration: Access more operations, such as timeline rendering and effects processing.
  • Memory optimizations: Can lead to performance improvements on systems with limited memory.

With these upgrades, it is faster to complete many tasks including importing high resolution and high-frame-rate footage, rendering complex projects with a lot of effects, and open and save projects.

I can use Premiere Pro, and while it offers a range of professional features, it might require some time to master them. Fortunately, Adobe provides a wealth of useful resources to assist individuals, from those aspiring to create films to marketing professionals, in effectively utilizing these tools to achieve their desired results.

Premiere Pro has two types of tutorials; ones that open in the app and those on your browser. I find the in-app guides to be the most helpful since they give you hands-on experience as you learn different techniques. The browser-based tutorials rely on step-by-step guides and videos to teach you how to perform various video editing functions.

Four Types of Editing Tools for Trimming Video

There are four different ways to edit a video in Premiere Pro. The Ripple and Roll edits are designed to work with the space in between two video clips.

  • Roll: When you have multiple clips, you can trim the In Point of the first video and Out Point of the second video without changing the length of the two clips.
  • Ripple: Close the gaps on the left and right of trimmed clips created by edits.

Ripple

The Ripple tool can close the gap between two clips

The Slide and Slip tools are crucial for adjusting two cuts in a sequence of three video clips.

  • Slide: When you use the Slide edit to move a clip to the right or left, it automatically trims the clip that it moves over.
Slip: Change the clip’s In and Out points by the same number of frames going in both directions. The Slip tool changes the starting and ending frames, but it doesn’t change the clip’s duration or affect the surrounding video clips.

While Slip and Slide are generally used on the middle clip, they both work where the video clip is the first or last one in the sequence.

Scene Edit Detection Uses AI to Simplify Editing Process

Scene Edit Detection is a new feature in Adobe Premiere Pro that uses AI to automatically detect scene changes in a video. This can be useful for quickly and easily editing videos that have a lot of scene changes, such as news reports, documentaries, and music videos.

To use Scene Edit Detection, simply select the video clip that you want to analyze and then click on the Scene Edit Detection button in the toolbar. Premiere Pro will then analyze the video clip and detect all of the scene changes.

Once the scene changes have been detected, you can add cut points at each scene change by clicking on the Add Cut Points button. Premiere Pro will then automatically add cut points at each scene change.

You can also adjust the sensitivity of the Scene Edit Detection feature by using the Sensitivity slider in the Scene Edit Detection panel. A higher sensitivity will result in more scene changes being detected.

Here are some tips for using Scene Edit Detection:

  • Use Scene Edit Detection on videos that have a lot of scene changes, such as news reports, documentaries, and music videos.
  • Avoid using Scene Edit Detection on videos that have a lot of motion or that are very complex. This can lead to inaccurate results.
  • Experiment with the different settings for Scene Edit Detection to find what works best for your footage.
  • Preview the detected scene changes before you apply them to your video to make sure that you are happy with the results.

Save Time with Text Based Editing

Text-based editing is a new feature in Adobe Premiere Pro that allows you to create rough cuts of your videos by simply typing text or a prompt. The software then uses AI to automatically generate the rough cut based on the prompts. It’s not quite ready to be used as the final editing tool for major projects or professional videos, however the text based editing is useful for creating quick videos for social media or for getting feedback on videos before I started editing the clip in detail.

To use text-based editing, simply create a new sequence in Premiere Pro and then click on the Text-Based Editing button in the toolbar. This will open the Text-Based Editing panel. Once the panel is open, type the text for your video. Premiere Pro will then automatically generate a rough cut of your video based on your text.

You can then edit the rough cut in Premiere Pro as needed. For example, you can add clips, trim clips, and adjust the timing of the clips. Once you are finished editing the rough cut, you can export it as a video file or upload it to a video hosting site.

Automatically adjust your Video Dimensions with Auto Reframe

Although it would be convenient if all social media platforms agreed upon a standard size for video clips, it seems unlikely that such uniformity will ever be achieved. Consequently, creating a visually appealing video that suits the dimensions of various platforms like Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, Instagram, and others becomes a challenging task.

The Auto Reframe tool was designed to make it easy to adjust the aspect ratio of your video without having to reformat the video.

Using advanced technology, Premiere Pro can analyze the video and make adjustments without losing important objects or cropping out a person’s head or some other object around the video’s border.

It’s important to note that this is still a new update, and it’s not quite perfect. The feature works best with objects that the Auto Reframe algorithm can correctly identify. Look over the videos before producing a final cut, and if you need, you can always make minor changes to the framing to perfect the video. For the most part, I had no issues with the videos I created, and I found this to be a big time saver.

To open the Auto Reframe tool, click on the Sequence button on the menu bar on the top of the page and click on the Auto Reframe Sequence option. This will open a dialogue box, and you can choose a preset size or choose custom dimensions.

Professional Transitions and Effects

Premiere Pro has more than 40 video transitions to make a smooth jump from one video clip to the other. If you feel that you need more transitions, you can either install a transition plugin for a larger variety or create a custom transition in Adobe After Effect and upload it through the Creative Cloud library.

The Transitions feature offers a user-friendly drag-and-drop functionality. To access it, navigate to the Effects menu located on the left side of your timeline and locate the Transition Effect folder. From there, effortlessly drag and position the desired file at either the beginning or end of your clip. To observe the transition in action, simply play the clip and view it in the video preview.

Adding Effects

Drag and Drop the transition on your video clip

Premiere Pro comes with all the video effects that you need to correct lighting issues, change the coloring, and transform tool to ensure everything looks perfect.

In the latest update, Adobe added the Warp Stabilize feature that is included with After Effects to fix shaky video clips. There are several different options that you can use when stabilizing the videos, including cropping the video, choosing how smooth you want the video, and auto-scale the borders.

Morph Cut Smooths Jump Cuts with AI

The Morph Cut feature in Adobe Premiere Pro is a video editing transition that helps to create polished videos of people talking by smoothing out jump cuts between sound bites. A common challenge that comes with editing footage with a “talking head” is that the subject can stutter, make frequent use of filler words, or simply go off on tangents. This can lead to a lot of jump cuts in the final video, which can make it look disjointed and unprofessional.

The Morph Cut feature uses AI to analyze the video footage and automatically create a smooth transition between two clips. This transition is created by morphing the two clips together, which helps to mask the jump cut.

To use the Morph Cut feature, simply select the two clips that you want to transition between and then click on the Morph Cut button in the toolbar. Premiere Pro will then automatically create the transitions. For the best results, you should use the Morph Cut feature on clips that are similar in length and composition. This will help to create a smoother transition. Additionally, try not to use it with clips that have a lot of movement as it can lead to choppy transitions.

Create 360 Degree VR Ready Videos

Premiere Pro enables users to create 360-degree videos compatible with a wide range of VR devices. With this software, you have the flexibility to adjust the viewing angle, ensuring that no essential details are overlooked. Moreover, you can even incorporate a 3D element into the video, catering to audiences without VR devices, although to fully experience the immersive effect, viewers would require red and blue glasses.

When you produce the video, make sure you tag it as 360-degree video so that sites like Facebook and YouTube will understand and treat it like a 360 video.

Multi-Camera Angle Editing

There is no limit to the number of camera angles that you edit with Premiere Pro. Highlight the clip you want to edit and open the multi-camera source sequence. The software will automatically sync the different clips based on several factors, including the audio, which is helpful in cases where there are no internal timestamps. The multi-camera editing gives you the ability to change the video angle while the original file is playing. Once you choose the angle you want, you can make all the edits you need to complete the scene.

Adjust the Colors

Adobe brought the Lumetri Color Tools to Premiere Pro. This gives video editors incredible flexibility when it comes to manipulating colors to set the video’s tone. You can change the white balance, increase or decrease exposure, and add highlights and shadows through the keyframes.

The Lumetri tool also has filters for the videos that can give you clip an HDR look, change it to a vintage style, or simply find a better color combination than what naturally appears on the screen.

Lumetri

Use the Lumetri filters to adjust how your video clip looks

Another feature that Premiere Pro recently added is Color Match. Activate this feature when stitching together two or more video clips. It will analyze the colors in each clip and match them to each other to avoid inconsistencies.

A Wide Range of Text and Typography Options

Video production and editing isn’t just about the video clips. You also need the right fonts and typography option to give your project the look and style you want. Text can be used to introduce the video, identify the speakers, display information, and create visual interest.

To add text to your video in Premiere Pro, you can use the Text tool. The Text tool is located in the Toolbar. To use the Text tool, simply click on the screen where you want to add the text and start typing.

Once you have added the text to your video, you can customize it using the Text panel. The Text panel is located in the Essential Graphics window and it allows you to change the font, size, color, and other attributes of the text. You can also add effects to your text in Premiere Pro. Simply select the text layer in the Timeline and then click on the Effects tab which lists all the effects that you can add to your text.

If you have a company, you’ll want to use the same font across your various brands for consistency and brand recognition. If your font isn’t installed on Premiere Pro, you can install the font on your computer. Then, it will be available from the Font drop-down menu in the Text panel.

Here are some tips for using text and typography in Premiere Pro:

  • Use a font that is easy to read. Avoid using fonts that are too small, too thin, or too ornate.
  • Use a font that is appropriate for the tone of your video. For example, use a more serious font for a business video and a more playful font for a personal video.
  • Use a color for your text that contrasts with the background. This will make the text easier to read.
  • Use effects sparingly. Too many effects can make your text look cluttered and unprofessional.

Advanced Audio Editing Tools

I found that the audio editing tools allowed me to make the necessary adjustments to get the output I was looking for. This was very helpful, since it meant I didn’t need to download a secondary program to edit the audio. The audio editing features are powerful enough to meet the needs of both professional and amateur video editors. Some of the most common audio editing features in Premiere Pro include:

  • Volume adjustment: Premiere Pro allows you to adjust the volume of individual audio clips and tracks. You can also use the audio mixer to adjust the overall volume of your project.
  • Sound effects: Premiere Pro includes a library of sound effects that you can add to your videos. You can also import your own sound effects from other sources.
  • Audio mixing: Premiere Pro allows you to mix multiple audio tracks together. This can be useful for creating complex soundtracks for your videos.

In addition to these basic audio editing features, Premiere Pro also includes a number of advanced audio editing features, such as:

  • Audio ducking: This automatically lowers the volume of one audio track when another audio track is playing. This is often used to lower the volume of the background music when someone is speaking in the video.
  • Audio equalization: It allowed me to adjust the frequency response of an audio track. This can be used to improve the sound quality of your audio tracks, or to create specific effects.
  • Audio compression: You can reduce the size of an audio file without sacrificing too much quality. This can be useful for saving space on your hard drive, or for streaming your videos online.

A Wide Range of Export Options

There are multiple export options in Premiere Pro, allowing you to export your video in a variety of formats and settings. Here are some of the most common options include:

  • Format: You can export videos in a variety of formats, including MP4, MOV, AVI, and WMV. The format you choose will depend on where you plan to share your video.
  • Frame size: Premiere Pro allows you to export videos in a variety of frame sizes, including 1920×1080 (HD), 3840×2160 (4K), and 7680×4320 (8K). The frame size you choose will depend on the resolution of your video footage and the device that you plan to play it back on.
  • Frame rate: There are a variety of available frame rates, including 24fps, 25fps, 30fps, and 60fps. The frame rate you choose will depend on the type of video that you are creating.
  • Bitrate: The bitrate determines the quality and file size of your video. A higher bitrate will result in a higher quality video, but it will also result in a larger file size. The bitrate you choose will depend on where you plan to share your video.

In addition to these basic export options, Premiere Pro also offers a number of advanced export options, such as the ability to export videos with custom codecs and profiles. You can also export videos with multiple audio tracks and subtitles.

Once you have selected the export settings, click on the Export button. Premiere Pro will then begin exporting your video. The export time will vary depending on the length of your video and the export settings that you have selected.

Once the export process is complete, you will find your exported video in the location that you specified in the Export Settings window.

Ease of Use

Premiere Pro is a complex program with a lot of advanced tools. It’s much easier to learn if you already have some basic knowledge of video editing. That being said, as far as the editing tools are concerned, it is very intuitive, and if you have the basic background, you should be able to master the basics and advanced tools fairly quickly.

If you have no prior knowledge or background in video editing, I recommend taking advantage of the in-depth tutorials that Premiere Pro offers. There are both in-app guides, which give you hands-on experience, and tutorials through your browser that use videos to walk you through different editing techniques.

One of the great things about Premiere Pro is that it’s compatible with other Creative Cloud apps. It’s easy to design artwork in Photoshop or Illustrator or create some transitions or digital effects in After Effects, upload them to your CC Library and then import those elements to your video.

Interface

Premiere Pro uses the same dark-style layout as the other Adobe software. I find it difficult at times, but it helps keep the focus on the work, and not on the busy toolbars and panels.

The workstation is fully customizable, and you can choose which tools you want in the menu bar for quick access. The default workstation is made up of four sections:

  • Original source preview on the top left side corner
  • The project preview is located in the top right corner
  • The project assets are organized in the bottom left corner
  • The multi-track video timeline is on the bottom right side

Premiere Pro Interface

The four panels of the default workstation

In addition to the default workstation, Premiere Pro has several other preset workstations, such as Assembly, Editing, Color, Effects, Audio, and Titles. Each workstation has different tools, based on the type of work you’re going to be doing. It’s easy to switch between multiple workstations while working on your project. The workstations are listed on the top menu bar, and when you click on it, it will automatically change your layout, adjust visible panels, and tools.

Workstations

Find the best workstation for your project

It won’t affect the work you’ve already done. Just change the quick access tools and available panels.

The interface is very flexible and works with drag-and-drop capabilities. You can move panels around, dock them or undock them, and add or remove tools to the various menus, to streamline your work process and save you time from searching for specific tools or features.

Additional Adobe Creative Cloud Apps

  • Adobe Photoshop: The most complete pixel-based, digital editing software on the market has the tools you need to transform any picture into a work of art. Photoshop uses layers to give users the freedom to edit each object or text without affecting anything else on the page. You can add shadows and colors or cut and crop out parts of a layer without worrying that it will add these effects to the rest of the picture.
  • Adobe Illustrator: Unlike Photoshop that works with pixels, Illustrator is a vector-based editing program. It has helpful features like a CSS Extractor Tool to ensure your work appears the same in Illustrator as it will after it’s published and a Color Synchronization feature to easily match the existing colors on the document with any work you’re doing.
  • Adobe InDesign: Use InDesign to produce professional layouts for both digital and print publications. With helpful features like a Master Page function and a built-in word processing tool, you’ll have everything you need to design and publish your page or magazine layouts.
